My first trip to Greece and its small beautiful islands. This post is going to focus on Athens, I will post the pictures of Santorini on a separate page.
When I first arrived to Athens, I was greeted by a driver who took me to my hotel. I used Welcome Pickups, since I was arriving alone in the middle of the night. I was greeted with a big smile and a much needed bottle of water. The driver gave me a little background to the areas we were passing by, and told me about the few things I should see in my short stay in Athens. He also told me that I came at the perfect time for the changing of guards, because the event happens only once a week. Glad to not miss this, I must admit I could not stop starring at the pom poms on their shoes:
From what I've heard, Athens can get very hot during the summer. It's also an expensive destination if you're coming from Canada, so when I booked my flight for April, i was relieved to find out that the season has not begun yet. Climbing up a hill to the Acropolis must've been a breeze compared to going there in +30s weather in August. The only downside to coming to the city that weekend was their Labour day. All the stores were closed, and there were public demonstrations.
